Five mistakes that cost companies their domain

Losing a domain is rarely a technical accident. It is usually an avoidable administrative mistake.

Your domain is your company's address and its email. Losing it takes down both the website and the mail. These are the causes we see most.

1. The registrant email no longer works Renewal notices go to the registrant address. If that mailbox belonged to a departed employee or an old domain, the notice never arrives. Review the registrant email once a year.

2. The domain is registered in someone else's name Many companies discover late that the domain sits under a former developer or agency — meaning they have no right to transfer or renew it. Check the registrant details today, not when there's a problem.

3. Relying on auto-renew alone Auto-renew fails when a card expires or an account changes. Enable it, but also watch for the confirmation message after each renewal.

4. Ignoring the grace period After expiry there is a grace period, then a substantially more expensive redemption period, then deletion. Every day of delay after expiry raises both cost and risk.

5. Leaving the registrar lock off Registrar lock prevents the domain being transferred without your authorisation. Leave it on permanently and open it only at the moment of an intended transfer.

Quick checklist - The registrant email works and reaches more than one person. - Registrant details are in the company's name. - The expiry date is known and in the company calendar. - Registrar lock is enabled. - The EPP code can be obtained when needed.

This review takes ten minutes a year and saves you a full day of crisis.
