The domain lifecycle

Knowing these stages saves you significant cost and risk.

  1. 01

    Registration

    The domain starts on an annual or multi-year cycle depending on the extension.

  2. 02

    Active

    The domain works and you can manage DNS records, nameservers and ownership transfer.

  3. 03

    Approaching expiry

    Reminders are sent 30, 15, 7 and 1 day before the expiry date.

  4. 04

    Grace period

    After expiry a grace period begins, during which renewal is usually still at the standard price.

  5. 05

    Redemption

    After grace comes a substantially more expensive redemption period with its own procedure.

  6. 06

    Deletion

    After redemption the domain is deleted and becomes available to anyone.

Purchase rules

  • No domain is registered before payment is confirmed and the final price is locked.
  • Availability and price are re-validated before the invoice is created and again before registration.
  • Premium domains require a separate, explicit confirmation before purchase.
  • Every purchase carries an idempotency key preventing duplicate registration or double charging.
  • If payment succeeds but registration fails, the order moves to manual review and our team contacts you.
  • Registrant details are recorded in your company's name, and management rights are handed to you.

Frequently asked questions

Is the domain registered in my name or SmartSky's?
In your name or your company's. SmartSky appears only as technical contact if you request it, and you can transfer the domain at any time under the extension's rules.
What if the price changes between search and payment?
Price and availability are re-validated before the invoice is created. If either changes you are shown the new position before proceeding, and nothing is charged at a stale price.
What is the difference between a premium and a standard domain?
A premium domain is designated by the registry at a much higher price than a standard one. We show this clearly and require a separate confirmation before purchase so there is no confusion.
How long does transferring in from another provider take?
It depends on the extension and how quickly you confirm. Some complete within days; others have a mandatory waiting period. We set out the expected duration for your extension before starting.
